Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize

Last week, the Nobel committee awarded Al Gore with the Nobel Peace Prize. This has received much publicity because of his popular movie, books, and popularity. He, as well as 2,500 scientists from around the world, who are part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, will share the prize.
I think that it is great that Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize because it will definitely bring more attention and importance to the growing climate issues we have been and will be experiencing. Hopefully, this will help to start the increased funding for more alternate energy projects and research.

Ever since Gore won the prize, there has been much speculation about whether or not he will use this new popularity to announce a run for the presidency in 2008. He has said no, but some are still hoping that he will. But, personally, I think he’s more compassionate about the climate change and not politics. He tried politics and the run for the presidency, and lost. However, if he did decide to run, Clinton is so far ahead in the poles that Gore would probably lose, which would lessen his influence.

Overall, I am personally happy that he won the prize because I think he has deserved it. But it's not just a prize for Gore; it is a prize for the issue that he represents. Also, I hope that a lot of good will come from this prize and more action will be taken against global warming, which is a huge topic in the world and in politics right now. But, if he does happen to run for president – however unlikely it may be – we will all know the second it happens.

In the article about this from The Sacramento Bee newspaper, there are still people who think that Gore is exaggerating the truth and should not have received the award – what do you think?

Any man or woman that runs for presidency and fails, try another level of government. But Gore uses the fame from his election to instead go where the money will carry him, or that is my feelings at least. He has made a movie and books, gets paid to speak to the public and is probably sponsored like crazy, he has no need to run for president because he will not gain anything from it, except maybe a few years off of his life from the pressure and anxiety from leading our nation. As for his nobel peace prize, congratulations, that is harder in my opinion to receive than becoming the U.S. president because 6 billion people can win that, and less than 200 million people can become the US president right now. *At least 100 million Americans do not qualify to run for president for either age requirements or residency problems.

I think that the awareness of the environment that he has been promoting is wonderful. Hopefully he will continue to use his popularity to get people more knowledgeable on the subject, which will allow changes to be made. In congruence with Ziva, I think that runny for President would not do anything to benefit him, and would only take away his focus on the environment. The path that he has been traveling is one he should continue to follow.

With Al Gore winning such a prestigious award, I wonder if Conservatives will still believe that Global Warming is a complete hoax..

The main legislative power of the President is to focus the agenda of Congress on the nation and a particular issue. That being said, I don't think Gore could really do much of a better job at that if he was President than he already is. Do we really want a President who didn't really want it himself?

First of all, i feel that while everything that Gore is doing is cool, i dont beleive that he deserved the nobel peace prize. even though it is extreemly important to protect the environment, i dont think that it has anything to do with creating or maintaining peace. the nobel prize is supposed to go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Raising global warming awareness is great, but i dont think that it merits the reception of a nobel peace prize. in regards to whether or not gore should run for President, i think that it would be a good thing because he has a chance to win, and if he did, he would have more power and more ability to lessen the causes of global warming.

i actually didnt know that, greg!! If that is what the nobel prize means then yeah maybe he didn't deserve it. He deserves recognition for his hard work but not this prize. I don't really think it would be a good idea if gore ran for president now becasue there are way too many possible candidates running and he might just be wasting his time campaigning. I do however think that he would make a great president in the future just not inthis coming election.

At first, I wondered about the connection to peace, but when you think about all the conflicts over fossil fuels, the conflicts brewing over fresh water, and all the potential conflicts that will arise from some countries affecting everyone else's climate in a negative way (not to mention the economic aspects of climate change, and economic deprivation often leads to conflict), well, there is something to the award. If the earth becomes less hospitable, the human population will fight over resources even more than it does already.

I agree with Brian, that having a president who doesn't want to be president is a bad idea. And, if Al Gore does announce he is running for president (which I highly doubt) he will look like a double speaking fool. It wouldn't sit too well with possible voters if Gore says he isn't running one day, and the next says he is, it would seem wishy-washy.
I agree with Greg, "Peace?". At first glance, I wondered if the Nobel Committee felt they needed to give Gore an aware, and they didn't have a "Nobel Prevent-Global-Warming Price", so they gave him the next best thing. After hearing reasons for his award, it does make sense.
I do like the fact that Gore is sharing the money with the UN scientists. Who knew kindergarden values are still being practiced?

I think it is great that Gore is being recognized for his efforts to protect the environment and raise awareness; however, I agree that the peace prize may not have been the best or most fitting award. I am quite positive that he will not attempt to run for president. I think it would be benefitial to him to recognize that he has a "supporting" role in the U.S. now rather than the "lead". He fits well in his position, and he is viewed more as an environmental icon rather than the next president. It would definately not be a wise decision of a Nobel Peace Prize winner to get greedy, and try to squeeze more juice out of this already debatable topic.

He completely deserves that award!
I apologize right now if this about any of you reading this, but Until a little while ago, I thought that only really ignorant peple didn't believe in global warming. But a couple weeks ago, I learned that a friend of mine didn't believe in global warming. I was shocked.
Just think. We could have had a president with a Nobel PEace PRize! Instead we have a president waging a war to rival Vietnam. If only....
