Healthcare Cartoon

So I was looking up more about the healthcare bill and came across this cartoon. Enjoy.

Edit:
To answer Brian, this political cartoon came from the Onion, so it is most likely a satire of the Republican's view on healthcare. Notice that the government is telling the "well-adjusted" kid that he needs to acquire health insurance on his own--something not possible unless you want child labor. In addition, a father would not say that the absence of a health insurance check "worked great," unless the crazy father supports child labor.

Derek said that "the government shouldn't completely hand out free healthcare." And why not? I realize it is a costly issue, but is there a problem with the American government "handing out" the right to a life of health? Although there are problems with nationalized health care, I do think that European countries with universal healthcare may be up to something...and honestly do we need to deprive children, no matter if their income is 40,000 OR 60,000 to make a point that people need to appreciate their healthcare?
I believe that the pursuit of HEALTH is something that's in our constitution and something that should be our RIGHT not our privilege.

And finally, I 100% agree with the cartoonist's satire. It is an absolutely ridiculous notion that children can be "spoiled" with such rights as to be able to go to the hospital. If so I hope that one day all children may be "spoiled."

Clearly a conservative minded cartoonist. Author thinks that people do no want hand outs and that giving free health care or food stamps or whatever will do more harm than good for people. Definitely has a point because i know from personal experience that when things are handed to me n a silver platter, i ten d to take them for granted and not work as hard. The same principle can be used in society in that not giving the people support actually make the economy/government better because it will force many to work harder and get things for themselves.

I think he's being sarcastic. The (...) just makes it seem too over-the-top, and simplifies the stiuation in a way that only satire would.

I agree with Benji. The cartoonist seems to be satirizing the Republican mindset. As he is depicting Americans as a small boy it would seem wrong to believe that the boy could fend for himself. I think that the cartoonist, by using an adolescent child as a metaphor, is actually criticizing the Republican thought on healthcare. I also think that he is trying to make fun of the Republican’s perception on how people view there healthcare plans. Not many people would rather pay for healthcare. I do, however, feel the need to concede my point by saying that the government shouldn't completely hand out free healthcare. Some sort of median would probably be best.

This cartoon would certainly would seem to be either simplistic or satirical. Elaina, do you know of a place where there are other cartoons from the same person? I'd like to know for sure...

Ah, thank you, Elaina. When you take something from the Onion, you should tell us at the beginning (unless you were testing us... ;0). Yes, it is a great satire of the Republican position... you could probably translate this to some other issues, too. Of course, there's also another side of this...
