Berkeley protesters have made history.
They are the first city in the nation to label the Marines as "unwelcome visitors"
On Shattuck street, protesters blocked the doors for 7.5 hours until the police made arrests and allowed people to enter the Marine Corps recruiting station at 2:30 pm.
Republicans have responded, drafting legislation to cut $2.1 million dollars of federal funding that goes to the school district, ferries, and nutritional education in an effort to curb the Berkeley outburst.
Freedom of speech. Is it wrong to block people from enlisting as a marine? Or should the Marine Corps just leave the liberal bubble they are in because the city encouraged their departure..
Sound like the 60's much?

I would be really angry if I wanted to be recruited to become a Marine and protesters were preventing me from doing so. Also, the protesters weren't really accomplishing anything. The people trying to walk through the door to the recruiting station obviously were already considering joining the Marines. Its not like the protesters, blocking the door, were going to change that person's mind if he/she seriously wanted to join.
These Berkeley protesters need to realize that even though it does suck that we're in a war not allowing people to enlist wont help solve the problem. They should be grateful that people are voluntarily giving up their lives and enlisting so that the government wont have to enforce a draft and force the protesters themselves to go. Even though the protesters have a right to protest, by blocking the doors they are infringing the rights of potential enlisters who can't get in to enlist.
i think that the real problem here is that congress is abusing their power. The Berkeley students were just exercising their first amendment right to free speech, and congress responded by cutting funding to their school district. To me, it seems like congress is abusing their power in order to keep protesters in line, and are in fact violating the students’ rights.
My opinion is simple, if someone wants to join the military, they have my support. If someone wants to wear a fur coat, they have my support. Red paint throwing is just as bad as protesting enlisting. Everyone has choices in life, and if someone wants to serve, the best of luck to them. If someone wants to be cruel like Cruel Divel (or w/e the lady's name is from 101 Dalmations) they have the right to. The biggest thing I have against events like this is that people who do these things act as though the people about to enlist have not thought about what they are going to do. Not many people wake up and decide to sign up without any prior thought, and that idea alone makes it so these Berkley activists think they are better(smarter) then the people who are enlisting, which obviously isn't true. [If it were they would have thought of a way to do it and not get arrested :)]
