Iran Continues to Enrich Uranium

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has produced an eleven page report that proves Iran has tested new technologies to build a nuclear weapon. Iranian officials have consistently disregarded comments about nuclear weapons. Ever since Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took office, the United States has questioned why he has scientists enriching uranium. When questioned, Ahmadinejad says Iran is building a peaceful nuclear program. Iran and the United States haven't had strong political connections since the overthrow of the Shah in 1979, and because of this many Iranian officials brush off verbal attacks from the United States. A November 2007 National Intelligence Estimate showed Iran had stopped its encrichment of uranium in the latter part of 2003 up until this past summer, due to increasing attacks from other countries.

If Iran develops a nuclear weapon, do you think it will be used harmfully or peacefully? Will the United States tighten sanctions on the Iranian economy before it is able to develop nuclear weapons?

I don't see how you could really use a nuclear weapon "peacefully". As part of self-defense, it works, but that just leads to the whole "mutually assured destruction" scenario, and those don't seem to end that well. More countries building nukes really just seems to hurt more than it helps. It would mean that anything could invoke a nuclear war. Then again, it's in a country's self-interest to have as much to protect themselves in order to dissuade others from attacking them.

They probably will never use or successful test one of these weapons. Plus, why does our country have the right to tell other's that they can't make nuclear weapons when our nuclear arsenal numbers in the thousands and ours are ready for launch at a moments notice. The US should began to dismantle their weapons before they can set sanctions limiting other country's weapons development.

How can you be building a peaceful nuclear program? If Iran continues to build nuclear weapons this will give other surronding countries incentive to do the same. This is just going to lead to a domino affect, where every country is going to try and have as many nuclear weapons possible(if that hasn't already happened already). I think that the United States should limit or downsize their nuclear program before they go and force other countries to do so.

Obviously we don't want to rush into any wars after the catastrophe that was, and still is, the Iraq war. I agree that it seems hypocritical for us to tell other countries they can't produce nuclear weapons when we're making making them ourselves.

Also, according to the AP:
"It's not the amount but the quality[of nuclear weapons] that counts," said one of the diplomats who was dismissive of the new U.S. file.
Another diplomat said senior agency officials also had dismissed the information as relatively insignificant and coming too late.
Several of the diplomats suggested the U.S. was disingenuous in providing such a large amount of what they described as questionable information just days before ElBaradei was to complete his report."
