The Dreaded Speeding Tickets

Yahoo had an "interesting" print today. They had an article that showed which states the heaviest speeding tickets occur in. I am not traveling this break, but is it okay for there to be such outrageous speeding fines? Especially if there are discrepancies between state's fines? I for one think it might be a little absurd once the State breaks the $400 dollar mark, but these states have fines above these. Seems like the states are taking advantage of their own residents and tourists!

While the monetary values seem a little extreme, it’s a small price to pay when these laws are simply trying to keep people safe. And it sucks for people who don’t know the speed limits change from state to state ( that is a little unfair ), especially those smaller east coast states, for us it takes almost four hours to drive out of here.

Well, technically, it is breaking the law to speed, and it does put others at risk, so charging large amounts of money seems like a reasonable penalty to speeding. In my opinion, what matters isn't how much is charged per se, but how lenient or strict the cops are in giving out the speeding tickets and the individual situations. For instance, it seems extreme if cops gave out speeding tickets for 5 or 10 miles above the speed limit. It would also seem extreme to give out a ticket for speeding when there aren't any other cars around, especially if it wasn't excessive speeding. Speed limits seem better determined by how fast the cars around you are going rather than the actual law. Going 15 over the limit seems like it would be OK if the cars around you were going 20 over.

I find this most absurd when the flow of traffic is going well above the speed limit if a person gets pulled over because it can take going over the speed limit and going with the flow just to change lanes and get where your going.
