Election 2008...again

I know that the presidential election can sometimes get too much attention from the media, overshadowing other important current events, but I think that this poll is worthwhile to look at. CNN has looked at an Associated Press Poll, and while it may not be all that accurate, it does show something that should be considered. Between the three candidates they seem to be almost neck and neck with each other.

Because McCain doesn't have a huge opponent in the Republican Party he has a huge advantage over both Obama and Clinton. According to the article: "Close to a quarter of Obama supporters reported they will back McCain if the Illinois senator fails to get the nomination, while a third of Clinton backers said they'd vote Republican if Obama is the Democratic nominee."

This division within the Democratic Party may lead the U.S. to having another Republican President. If McCain is elected as President you know the war will only continue. Do you believe that we are going to have another Republican President? Is the divide too wide that if a voter's candidate doesn't get elected they will vote for Republican?

Those numbers sound really sketchy. A third of Clinton supporters, people who are liberal, will vote McCain just so they don't have to vote Obama? Seems doubtful to me.

AH! I think that this is completely true. It'll be almost embarrasing for the democratic party if they don't have enough party cohesion to in the end, elect a democratic candidate. It really seems like these two candidates (Obama & Clinton) have been going neck to neck so much that they WILL in the end divide the democratic party to a point that McCain will pull forward.

I can see this happening :/

I think that this poses a quite interesting debacle to Democrats nation wide. Many supporters have become so involved in the primary election that they have began to see the opposing democratic candidate as the enemy. It seems that one solution to this problem is to put the losing candidate for nomination on as the vice president, giving us a ticket with both Obama and Clinton. Perhaps this could unify democrats and keep McCain out of office. in regards to the poll numbers, it does seem a bit extreem to say that a third of Clinton voters will betray the democratic party, but i know that due to my Obama support, I have begun to dislike Clinton. However, i dont think my dislike is strong enough to make me vote repubelican.

I agree with Noelle that it will be embarrassing for Democrats to let a Republican president win just because they don't have enough party unity. But in the end it all depends on who people feel more loyal to: the candidate or the party. I think the tight race between Clinton and Obama has created and will continue to create more polarization within the democratic party, but once the democratic nomination is secured and all the hype surrounding the nomination dies down, both Clinton and Obama supporters will probably unite to defeat McCain because they'll realize having a president from the same party is more important.

I still think it's too soon to be polling. Who knows what people's opinions will be over the coming months? Things will probably change considerably, and let's not forget things like the October surprise!
